As the saying goes: “united we stand, divided we fall.” A common notion that I am sure most of us are familiar with. There is something uniquely beneficial to unity, and something detrimental to division. We often prefer to do activities as groups. We walk together. We see movies together. We work together. And yet, there is and has been an odd hostility between local churches in America. Churches simply do not trust each other. There is much suspicion concerning the church down the road. Who are they? What do they want? They better not come this way. There are certainly valid reasons why such suspicion has existed. But, we do not want to fall into a market mentality where we are trying to out-do the church down the road or feel the fear that they might put us out of business. What should we as a church to fight against this? How can you promote unity between your church and another church?

First, you can pray. If you are at Renovation Church during a Sunday worship service, you have encountered our prayer of intercession. During that prayer, we pray as a church for another local church with whom we are partners in the gospel. We prayer for whatever specific needs they have, and we pray for their faith, well-being, and work in their community. We fight against division and pursue unity in this. We are not enemies, but partners in the work that Father is doing to bring people to His Son by the work of the Holy Spirit. We are Christ’s church in this. So, we pray as a church. You also, pray for local churches that stand on the gospel of Jesus Christ. Pray that the Lord would bless them. That the Lord would be honored through them. That the Lord would use them to be His faithful witnesses in their community.

Second, take any opportunity to serve alongside these other churches. Now, covid has put a damper on what and how often churches are doing things, and whether they do them together. But, as the world continues to open, we can all expect more opportunities to arise. So, be ready for them! Renovation Church is a part of a group of churches here in the northern suburbs called CNY One Church. Anticipate that partnership to create avenues for you to walk in faithful service with other believers. Maybe there is a gospel church near where you live and your MC can partner with them in meeting some need or for a prayer meeting. Serve alongside brothers and sisters!

Friends, there is one body of Christ that is visibly expressed in local congregations. We would do well to love and serve alongside any and every church that stands on the true gospel of Jesus Christ. We are already united in a common bond and confession, we need not be suspicious or paranoid. After all: “united we stand, divided we fall.”
