Hope in Troubling Times

Ethan Fordham   -

For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet.

The last enemy to be destroyed is death.

1 Corinthians 15:25, 26

Before COVID-19, Christ was king. During this current COVID-19 pandemic, Christ is king. After COVID-19, Christ will be king. Over the universe, before time and into eternity, Christ reigns. What better news can we hear in our current time? But, we still feel anxiety, stress, and fear over our circumstances. Though Christ exercises authority and governs life now, we still witness the suffering of others and feel pain within ourselves. People get sick, suffer, and die. We live in the tension between Christ’s current kingly reign and His eternal reign in the new heaven and new earth.

This is what many call the tension between the already, but not yet. Christ has already purchased for His Church every spiritual blessing; but, we are not yet before our God in glory. Already, we have eternal life in Christ; but, our bodies are still subject to death. Christ is already victorious over death, but death is not yet destroyed. COVID-19 can kill, but Christ’s triumph over sin and death is sure. Though COVID-19 can infect our blood, Christ has secured our salvation through His blood. Brothers and sisters, though this is a frightening time, cling to Christ and His authority over creation. Live as people with hope. Look forward to that Day in which Christ will conclusively defeat death and we will dwell with our God, forever.
